All Around The Campfire

Playing Tourist

We’ve had a busy few weeks of graduations and family in town, which means we haven’t had time for camping. It’s not al all weird that to console myself, I keep finding myself making excuses to go out to the motorhome. Someone has to be in charge of checking that the stash of chocolate for s’mores hasn’t been destroyed in a freak accident. I’ve checked the chocolate so much that now I have to buy more. Oops!

My in-laws were visiting from New York this past weekend. For some reason they mostly come to Oregon in the late fall or early winter, so we wanted to take advantage of their summer visit by playing tourist.

Sunday we went downtown for the Bite of Bend. I didn’t realized until we stopped for lunch and the hostess said Happy Father’s Day to my husband and father-in-law that none of the kids were with us. I’m sure they were too busy planning a massive Father’s Day gift that is just a little late.

Monday we started the day with breakfast at McKay Cottage. It was amazing as always, and I need at least 10 more stomachs so I don’t have to agonize over the menu choices.

After we stuffed ourselves silly, we headed north to Smith Rock State Park in Terrebonne. We didn’t do any hiking on this trip. It was strictly time to enjoy the beauty and take a few pictures. I really wish I would have thought to take my DSLR, but I had to make do with my phone’s camera.

From Smith Rock we went to Lake Billy Chinook in Culver. The lake was created by the construction of the Round Butte Dam, and it is where the Metolius, Crooked, and Deschutes Rivers converge. I’ve lived 45 miles from it since 2004 and only made my first visit this year. This summer is already super busy for us, but next summer I’d like to rent a boat to play on the lake. I think maybe a pontoon boat, because I’m not ready to commit to a houseboat.

After tearing ourselves away from the amazing views, we drove back to Bend and stopped at Worthy Brewing for lunch and beer. I can’t wait to see what it will look like when their expansion is finally completed.

If I’m lucky, I will get my camping fix this weekend. It’s either that or eat several more chocolate bars!
